One of the biggest challenges for the re-issues of The Geese And The Ghost, Wise After The Event and 1984 when considering potential sources for additional tracks is to get to grips with the myriad of analogue recording formats that were used for the original recording of the albums. The good news on this front is that Ant has nearly all the original multi-track tapes for the albums in his archives.
Here is a guide to the different multi-track formats used for each album. These details only relate to the actual recording of the album and do not cover the formats used to record demos for each of the albums. The different sizes mentioned here (¼", 1" and 2") refer to the width of the tape used for recording.
All of the mixes for each of the albums was made to ¼" 2-track (stereo) tape - a separate article on these tapes as well as the final masters will be added in due course.

The Geese & The Ghost
Initial recordings for The Geese & The Ghost were made on 4-track (using ¼" tape) during the sessions for the album in October and November 1974 at Send Barns. The two TEAC 4-track machines used had been bought from the initial advance made by Charisma Records. The 4-track masters were then transferred to 16-track (using 2" tape) for the later sessions which took place at Tom Newman's studio in July 1975. Final sessions for the album took place at Olympic Studios in November 1976 and were recorded (we think) on 24-track. |

Wise After The Event
Initial recordings for the album were made on 16-track (2" tape) at Essex Studios in London. The selected final takes of the backing tracks were then transferred to 24-track on the Manor Mobile studio for the overdubbing which was recorded at The Farmyard in Buckinghamshire. The orchestral session for "Regrets" was recorded at CBS Studios in London on 24-track. |

1984
The initial recording for 1984 was done on 8-track (using 1" tape) by Ant at Send Barns using his Brenell Mini 8 tape recorder. The 8-track tapes were then transferred to 24-track at Atmosphere Studios in London for additional overdubs. |
